Music has a special way of holding onto time. A song lasts a few minutes; a memory can last a lifetime. Only when you listen to the same music again years later do you discover that those songs have imperceptibly become a story. Not because you intended it that way at the time, but because life unfolded between the first and the last note.
That thought occupied my thoughts over the past few days.
I looked back on a period that brought me a lot. Not just love, but also new insights about myself. Not just beautiful memories, but also a different way of looking at relationships. It made me think about how often we measure the value of a relationship by whether it lasted. As if only a shared life proves that love was truly meaningful.
More and more often, I wonder if, by doing so, we are not doing injustice to everything that an encounter along the way can offer.
A relationship changes a person. You discover sides of yourself that you did not yet know. You get to know a different culture, look with different eyes at customs that were taken for granted by you, and realize that love is much more than seeking similarities. Differences, in fact, can be an invitation to remain curious. To listen. To try to view the world through someone else’s eyes.
For me, that is perhaps the most beautiful outcome of a relationship.
Falling in love is a special process. It often begins with a smile, a sense of curiosity, and the desire to spend time together. Trust develops slowly. You build memories together. You discover each other’s quirks and come to appreciate precisely those qualities. Without realizing it, someone finds a permanent place in your life.
It was only much later that I realized that it is precisely those ordinary moments that eventually become the most valuable memories.
Not the big trips.
Not the special gifts.
Not the photos you keep.
It is precisely the moments when life was just very ordinary for a while. Eating together. Laughing together. Silence in which words were not needed. Looking at each other and knowing that the other person is there. It is precisely those moments that give color to a memory in retrospect.
We live in a society where success is often linked to sustainability. A marriage of fifty years evokes admiration. A relationship that ends is quickly met with the question of what went wrong. Yet, that way of looking at things feels increasingly inappropriate.
Not every encounter is meant to last a lifetime.
That does not detract from the meaning it held along the way.
I am grateful for the moments we shared. For the sparks that accompany a new love, for the trust that grew slowly, for learning to see through the eyes of someone who grew up in a different culture. For all the moments when I felt how special it is when two lives meet.
Those experiences do not disappear.
They become part of who we are.
Actually, that applies to many more encounters in life. Years later, a teacher can still be heard in the way a student views the world. A colleague can subtly influence the way you lead. A friend can impart a thought that only gains true meaning much later. People leave traces in each other’s lives, often without realizing how great that influence will ultimately be.
That is why I believe gratitude holds a special place in life. Gratitude does not ask whether something has lasted forever. It looks at what an encounter has added to who we are today. It acknowledges that something may be over and, at the same time, continues to see how valuable the journey has been.
That thought eventually brought me back to two songs.
The first was titled *Cherish*. Cherish what you receive as long as it is on your path.
Much later, *I Still Carry You* appeared.
When I saw those two titles side by side, I realized that they subtly summarize a chapter of my life. Between those two songs lies a story full of wonder, love, growth, and memories that have shaped me.
Whatever the future holds, that chapter will always remain part of my story. And when I look back on it, one feeling ultimately remains the strongest:
Gratitude.
