In the hearing with Mona Keijzer she was questioned about her statements on the talk show of BNNVARA– Sophie and Jeroen – in which she stated that #Jew-hatred is part of #Islamicculture). The questioner, in my opinion rightly, draws a comparison to #Christianculture and whether a minister who would say that about that culture should apologize or better yet retract the words…
In her response, she doesn’t know where to start. But she quickly goes into depth about her faith as a #Catholic believer. She rightly explains that not everyone has to think like that, because everyone can be different in their faith, just as she herself is ‘different’ in her Catholicness. This rightful conclusion of Mona Keijzer alone should be reason enough for her to realize that she should retract the generic statement she made.
But then she continues a bit about the Bible. She reflects on the division in the Bible into the Old and New Testament and says: “The New Testament, with the coming of #Jesus, has perfected the Old Testament”, after which she continues: “As a result, those texts no longer apply”. I repeat these words: “as a result, those texts no longer apply”… I will name a few from the Old Testament?, There are only 10… I take them from the Tenach/Torah of Judaism. This is the same book. All translations/editions after that have been adapted by people with a different belief and vision and are therefore not completely correct (they deviate (understandably) in some translations.
1 – I am the Eternal your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
2 – You shall have no other gods before Me.
3 – You shall not take the name of the Eternal your God in vain.
4 – Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy.
5 – Honor your father and your mother.
6 – You shall do no murder.
7 – You shall not commit adultery.
8 – You shall not steal.
9 – You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10 – You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor’s.
To speak with the words of Mona Keijzer:
“With the coming of Jesus and the new testament, these texts no longer apply…..”
That would be a nice mess if we were to do that…
I hope she has a different view than what she is expressing now. And that she comes to her senses and retracts her statements and apologizes. Not on the basis of the 10 commandments. But on the basis of her own conclusion, that you can never tar an entire culture or an entire faith (and certainly not all people in that culture or faith) with the same brush. Because that is a very “false testimony about our neighbors”…
And even though Mona Keijzer thinks that words from the Old Testament do not matter. Words certainly do matter. Ordinary spoken words, but also those from the Old Testament.
